Once these self-healing materials escaped, they would dutifully attach themselves to the nearest possible molecule that had created an opening due to the fact that they were failing and then opened up a spot on their chemical chain. In this case you would have these self-healing materials already built into the material, just waiting for a chance to go do something great, by solving a problem and preventing a tear, or repairing the tear which was occurring. In doing so it would actually make the material stronger in the place where it had ripped open.
In many regards this is similar to theories that we believe organic matter uses to heal itself. Human bones for instance, human skin, and things of this nature. Why couldn't we create such surfaces, composites, and materials? The reality is we can, it's just material science, chemistry, and manufacturing compounds on-the-fly, perhaps literally, as in healing the wing of an airplane while it is in flight because it has structural damage, or cracks in the skin.
Okay so, you ask; "can we really do that?" Yes, I believe we can, and I believe we will, and even if this isn't the exact strategy we use where we put self-healing compounds inside of buckyballs, or carbon nano tubes, or similar type nanoscale structures, you are beginning to see what is possible, and why we must pursue these technologies and science for the betterment of all mankind.
